To engage Māori students in learning, high performing schools had:
- integrated te reo me ngā tikanga across the curriculum
- used culturally appropriate contexts in teaching
- increased teachers’ knowledge of te reo me ngā tikanga
- focused on building positive teacher-student relationships
- given prominence to positive role models
- developed accessible and effective guidance services (e.g. career pathways)
- adopted formative assessment practices
- supported and promoted student learning through mentoring
- established whānau or home rooms
- increased numbers of Māori staff
- monitored and reported Māori achievement
- developed a seamless curriculum.
